A satisficing algorithm for pragmatic conditionals

چکیده
In a recent Mind & Society article, Evans (2005) argues for the social and communicative function of conditional statements. In a related article, we argue for satisficing algorithms for mapping conditional statements onto social domains (LópezRousseau and Ketelaar, 2004). The purpose of the present commentary is to integrate these two arguments by proposing a revised pragmatic cues algorithm for pragmatic conditionals.

Promising and warning are speech acts that have to be credible to be persuasive. The question is: When does a promise become incredible and a warning unpersuasive? Whereas credibility has been researched from a social persuasion perspective, this article answers that question empirically, from an adaptive heuristics perspective. First, we present a satisficing algorithm that discriminates condi...
متن کاملA Compositional Semantics for ‘even If’ Conditionals
This paper presents the first possible world semantics for concessive conditionals (i.e., even if A, C conditionals) constructed in a compositional way. First, the meaning of if is formalized through a semantics that builds on the proposal given by Stalnaker [1968]. A major difference from Stalnaker’s approach is that irrelevant conditionals (i.e., conditionals where the antecedent and the cons...
متن کاملTowards a Radically Pragmatic Theory of If-Conditionals
It is generally agreed that constructions of the form “if P, Q” are capable of conveying a number of different relations between antecedent and consequent, with pragmatics playing a central role in determining these relations. Controversy concerns what the conventional contribution of the if-clause is, how it constrains the pragmatic processes, and what those processes are. In this essay, I beg...
متن کاملThe Puzzle of Conditionals with True Clauses: Against the Gricean Account
Indicative conditionals, that is sentences of the form “If p, then q,” belong to the most puzzling phenomena of language. On the majority of accounts of indicative conditionals, the truth of p and q suffices for “If p, then q” to be true or highly acceptable. Yet, many conditionals with true clauses, even if there is a meaningful connection between them, sound odd. The most common reaction to t...

There has been a murder in the mansion. There are, and we all know that this is so, only three suspects: the gardener, the driver, and the butler. We believe, and we have our reasons for so believing, that if the gardener did not do it, then the driver did. We share belief in this particular conditional, and this conditional is of a particular kind. It is what Quine calls an ‘‘ordinary indicati...
